English words of Dutch origin

Posted by Tjeerd on September 9, 2005

As what has already surpsised me sometimes, is the fact that there are certain words in English which are spoken or written very closely to the Dutch version of a word. The Internet wouldn’t be the Internet if there exists a list of those words.

The Others

Posted by Tjeerd on September 5, 2005
It’s a long time ago that I posted something about movies. But I know I have to do it more frequently to spread the GoodMoviesReligion. This time the movie is called The Others. I am almost sure I’ve heard about it in the past, but I’ve never seen the movie (perhaps because the trailer didn’t look good enough? I don’t know). Anyway I’ve seen this movie now and I’d really advice you to watch this movie. There are almost no special effects in it and the whole setting doesn’t look that special. But as soon as you start watching you start thinking and guessing about why certain things are happening in the movie. I will not tell anything further about it, but it’s certainly an original and brilliant movie.

Selling shoes

Posted by Tjeerd on September 5, 2005

Last week, while waiting on Centraal Station in Rotterdam for my girlfriend to arrive, I tried to enjoy myself by watching around in every direction. Lots of people wandering around and that doesn’t make it easier for me to spot where I came for. Anyway, next to me was also a guy standing and waiting for someone. Cool, we were both waiting for somebody I thought, I’ve almost made friends. We were now both watching in every direction and sometimes we stared for a little moment to eachother. Suddenly a group with a few girls and a guy came standing in front of us. The guy in that group was enthousiastic about something really stupid, I thought by myself; you are just acting like you have to impress your girlies. The group left and at the same time my also-waiting-almost-friend looked at them with a face and expression like “pff, what a stupid monkey”. Great, I started to like my also-waiting-almost-friend, because he thinks the same way like I do.

Then it happened, we were both standing there for about ten minutes now and he started talking to me! – in Dutch ofcourse – “Can I ask you something?” I replied with “Yes.” He then replied with something you’d never expect: “Do you sell shoes?”
My whole world collapsed, why the f**ck would I sell shoes? Do I look like a shoe seller? I replied with a “No.” with a laugh to keep it friendly. He then told me that he had an appointment with someone where he’d buy shoes from, but that person didn’t show up already for half an hour. He was now disappointed and he decided to leave me alone.

Discogs

Posted by Tjeerd on September 1, 2005
A user-built database of music information. Imagine a site with discographies of all labels, all artists, all cross-referenced. It’s getting closer every day.

Don’t know how reliable it is, but it’s very useful if you want to know how many albums an artist has made. Or to see what albums they have made, but have never been released etc. You can’t compare it with www.allmusic.com, because that is official information (I hope so). Almost forgot to mention where you can find it: www.discogs.com.
