Househunting: too late

Last year we now and then looked for houses nearby Utrecht, but we weren’t really active. Since beginning of this year we are more actively seeking for a house and once in a while we see a house which looks interesting from the outside. Then we arrange a realtor to get a free tour to see the inside of the houses. It’s a good thing to do to see what you can expect for a certain price. Till now we aren’t yet really convinced of the houses, although a house in De Bilt came close, but it was too small. Everytime we realize that the house we currently rent is relatively spacey.

Anyway, two weeks ago we saw a house in for sale for 6+ months, but the weather was bad and there were streetworkers making a lot of noise. We were actually doubting whether this house is situated in a nice area. Anyway, we didn’t arrange a realtor yet for this house. Last week we visited together with a realtor other houses which I personally didn’t have a “good” feeling about and the living rooms were again smaller than what we are used to. At the end of the day we biked along the house we first saw, but now without streetworkers and with a nice sun. Actually the house wasn’t bad at all. And last weekend we fantasized about customizing the house and upgrading it, we really started to like it, especially because the living room is at least the size of ours. And the total space was also quite big. Today I called the realtor to make an appointment and they told me that the house was sold last Thursday. Really unbelievable and I really really really regret that we didn’t come into action earlier. For the moment it’s still strange that on the internet the house is still for sale. And even when we were there last weekend the for sale sign was hanging on the window.

I am not happy. On the one hand I hope that the current buyers cancel their bid, but on the other hand I hope that something else comes along which comes close to this house.

Squeezebox Classic streaming audioplayer

Squeezebox ClassicSince two days I really miss my favourite radiostation, it’s now officially out of the ether. Immediately I looked into alternatives. One alternative is to connect the stereoinstallation via coax to the cable, where Arrow Jazz still broadcasts. Unfortunately the installation doesn’t have a coax input. Then my gadget-instinct showed up and I searched for streaming audioplayers on the internet. This means you can listen to thousands of internet radiostations and the most important thing, I can also listen to Arrow Jazz again. After some research I decided to buy the Logitech Squeezebox Classic (actually manufactured by SlimDevices) at RAF (Utrecht).

This device is elegant, small, low power (only several watts) and very functional. It contains a vacuum fluorescent display with a 320×20 resolution which can display the songname, RSS-feeds or a VU-meter for example. Furthermore it contains a Wifi-receiver for the internet audiostreams and several audio outputs (analog RCA, digital optical, digital coax and headphone mini jack). The nice thing about the device for me is that there is a big open source community behind it (Wiki, forums). The company (SlimDevices) is really open about the design and what components are in it. Furthermore you can also get plugins for custom visualizations.

Finally you can also control the device (volume, change radiostation, add RSS-feeds) via internet or via the remote that comes with it. Anyway, I/we am/are very happy with it. The old radio is now stored somewhere upstairs.

Sponsoring Arrow Jazz FM

Arrow Jazz FMMy only favourite radiostation seems to be in financial problems. Really a pity, because they broadcast a really wide range of great jazz music. It’s for me a very good relaxation radio station. About a year ago I said that Arrow Jazz FM would be the only radiostation where I’d pay money for their good music, but you couldn’t donate money to them at that moment. A few weeks ago however it was in the news that Arrow Jazz FM has financial problems and perhaps would disappear. You can donate money and if you pay more than 15 euros you get a free Arrow Jazz FM CD. So I immediately transferred some money to them in the hope that it makes a little differerence and that at least the radiostation won’t disappear. In the meanwhile I am waiting for my CD, which I haven’t received yet …

House hunting

Since last year we are keeping an eye on houses nearby Utrecht and we are not the only ones. Which makes it difficult to find a house which is an improvement on what we currently have and which is also nicely situated. In the price range we are searching you actually get the same as we already have now, only difference is that it’s then centrally heated and it has (sometimes) isolated glass and a garden. But usually the total space of the house doesn’t differ that much compared to what we have now. Actually, the more houses we see, the more we realize that our rented house isn’t that bad at all, if you see what neighbourhood we are living in at the moment. Not that we want to stay here for years, but we are not in a big hurry to pay a lot of money and actually getting not that much improvement. So we can save money in the meantime.

But anyway, last week we looked in De Bilt and visited a nice house together with a realtor, the house is situated in a nice neighbourhood, in front of a small park, nice trees in the garden. The realtor already suggested to chop a tree in the garden, but we were actually coming there because of the trees. The house was built in a slightly older style and looked nice on the internet. From the outside it indeed still looked nice, but inside it looked smaller compared to what we have now, while it should be 20m2 bigger. There were some things which had to be upgraded, like electricity, new stairs, partly new windows, new ceilings etc. Not really a big problem, but the house was already relatively expensive. We could pay that, but compared to what we have now we didn’t find it a real improvement. If the price drops 10-15% (it already dropped the last few months) then it really becomes interesting.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the house I made in Sketchup. Click on the thumbnails to see the larger version.
